Module 2

Meridians, five-element theory and traditional Chinese medicine

Andrija in a Yin Yoga posture

Duration: 50 hours
Certification: Yoga Alliance Continuing Education (YACEP)

The second module centres on studying the meridian system, five-element theory and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), their philosophical foundations and their application in Yin Yoga.

Through theoretical lectures and practical work, we explore the fundamental concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, the relationship between yin and yang, five-element theory (Wu Xing), the functional systems of the internal organs (Zang Fu), and traditional understandings of the connections between physical, emotional and psychological processes.

Particular attention is given to studying meridian pathways, their interrelationships and their connection to five-element theory. We explore how traditional Chinese medicine interprets different patterns of imbalance, cyclical changes in nature and human life, and relationships between individual functional systems.

In the practical part of the training, we apply this knowledge through Yin Yoga postures, an understanding of meridian-related areas and the creation of themed sequences. We focus particularly on bringing functional anatomy into dialogue with the traditional meridian model, while respecting their different theoretical foundations.

What makes this approach distinctive?

This module is specifically designed for yoga teachers who wish to broaden their knowledge beyond anatomy and physical practice and explore one of the oldest traditional systems for understanding the human being.

Studying meridians, five-element theory and the philosophical foundations of traditional Chinese medicine opens up new possibilities for reflecting on and shaping yoga practice. It gives participants additional knowledge and a different perspective from which to approach their own practice, teaching and understanding of the relationship between the body, emotions and human experience.

The knowledge gained is not limited to Yin Yoga. It can also enrich other yoga styles, from creating themed sequences to incorporating traditional concepts of breathing, attention and meditation into teaching.

The aim of the training is not merely to introduce meridians and the five elements, but to develop the ability to understand them and apply them meaningfully in one’s own work. For yoga teachers, this is an opportunity to build on existing knowledge with new insights and deepen their understanding of different traditions that have explored the human being and human experience throughout history.

Who is the training for?

The training is intended for yoga teachers of all styles, aspiring teachers and committed practitioners who wish to deepen their knowledge of the meridian system, five-element theory and traditional Chinese medicine, and their application in yoga.

Previous knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine is not a prerequisite for participation.

Certification

On completing the training, participants receive a certificate confirming completion of the 50-hour module. The training is delivered within the Yoga Alliance Continuing Education (YACEP) programme, and registered yoga teachers may record the relevant continuing education hours in accordance with Yoga Alliance rules.
